Ask for what you want (even if it feels uncomfortable)

Hi friends,

One lesson I’ve had to learn the hard way: things don't automatically happen for you — you have to ask for what you want. This can be especially hard for those of us who grew up striving to be likable, to not rock the boat. In fact, you might even find yourself resenting people who boldly declare what they want, who don't have the same hangups about putting themselves out there. But the truth is this: no one can read your mind. If you want something to happen, you have to be the maker of your own destiny.

For years, I worked in a corporate setting thinking that if I just showed up, worked hard, and did my job well, I’d naturally move up the ladder. But that wasn’t the case. I learned that progress only happened when I spoke up — when I made it known what I wanted. At first, that felt uncomfortable. I’d spent so long trying to be agreeable and not make waves that advocating for myself felt almost wrong. But with time, I realized that naming what I wanted didn’t make me difficult — it made me clear. And clarity is magnetic.

I gained personal clarity by taking the time to write down what I actually wanted my work life to look like — the kind of projects I enjoyed, the ways I wanted to collaborate, and the freedom to travel for work. From there, I took it a step further and framed it in a way that also benefited the company: identifying the gaps I could fill and the systems I could create to bring in more revenue. When I shared my vision, my boss was so impressed that she pitched it to her boss — and my dream role was created for me.

That experience taught me that your ideal life doesn’t just appear — it unfolds when you name what you want and take aligned action toward it.

Reframe Prompts
Clarity creates movement. You don’t have to know how everything will unfold. Just start by getting honest about what you want. Sometimes intention can open doors you didn’t realize were waiting for you.

This week, use this as a short exercise to practice naming what you want — clearly, confidently, and without apology.

  • Start with honesty.
    What do you truly want right now — in work, relationships, or your personal life — even if it feels unrealistic or too big? Write it down without filtering.
  • Name the why.
    Why do you want it? What feeling, experience, or outcome are you really seeking underneath the surface desire?
  • Clear the noise.
    What stories or fears make you hesitate to ask for it? (For example: fear of being “too much,” not deserving it, or worrying what others will think.)
  • Find your words.
    Rewrite your desire as a simple, declarative sentence that starts with:
    “I have…” or “I am ready for…”
  • Speak it into the world.
    Say it out loud — to yourself, to a friend, or to the universe. Notice how it feels in your body when you give your desire a voice.

Sometimes the simple act of naming what you want is all it takes to start the momentum.
