The music only you can make

Hi friends,

This week I saw the Jeff Buckley documentary IT'S NEVER OVER. I've been a fan of his music ever since I discovered Grace as a teenager, but I didn't know much about his life. Early on the in the film he says in an interview: "Every human being has music that only they can make."

That line has been swirling around in my head since. And it doesn't just apply to music — it applies to any talent, story, or gift that only you can bring into the world. If you don't share it, no one else can.

I've always believed this. I love humans and the art they share. To me, just the simple act of sharing is impressive, regardless of the quality. In a society where sameness is often valued, I find myself in awe of the individual more and more.

All of this get me thinking about the global shift we're moving toward in 2027 according to Human Design. For the last 400 years or so, humanity has been under the Cross of Planning — a theme centered on societal structures, relying on the collective, and building systems for survival. But soon we'll move into the Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix — a theme of personal rebirth and collective awakening, where the focus shifts toward individual empowerment and self-reliance.

We're already feeling this. The cracks in our institutions are becoming harder to ignore. Some might see this a negative thing, but I believe it is an invitation: by empowering individuals, we make room for more variety, more originality. More of the music only you can make. Every act of true self-expression strengthens the collective, because individuality is what fuels our next era of growth.

Reflection Prompts

The best way to prepare for this shift is living authentically in the now — the more aligned you are with your inner authority the easier the transition will be.

  • What is the art that only I can make?
  • Where am I still hiding parts of myself that want to be expressed?
  • How can I act in alignment with what feels right for me right now?

Astro Note ✨
This theme ties in with something that happened earlier this week — the Sun in Virgo squared Uranus in Gemini, shaking us awake to authenticity and encouraging us to drop the masks and embrace original expression. What mask are you wearing because you think it feels safer, and what would it take to drop that act?

Recs

  • Jeff Buckley's Grace is, in my opinion, one of the best albums ever released. If you're interested in upgrading to a vinyl copy, you can find that here.

I'd love to hear about the music only you make, or the stories that only live inside your head. What art do you have in you? Let me know.

xo,
Christen

Christen Hong Coaching 9/24/25 Hi friends, I’ve noticed how my constant habit of tuning into my phone leaves me feeling overwhelmed. The news cycle is endless and often debilitating — to the point where lately I found myself struggling to do anything. I know that to show up effectively in the world, I have to take care of myself first. So this week I gave myself a break and made Sunday an internet-free day. I’ve taken internet breaks before and they always feel good — and yet, it’s still...

Christen Hong Coaching 09/17/25 Hi friends, Maybe it's the eclipse season stirring things up, but I've been noticing how often a tiny assumption can quietly snowball into a whole story I take as truth. This week I've been reflecting on projection and assumption, and how they shape the way I relate to what I think I know. Over the weekend I ran into a friend and recalled a story that we had discussed years ago. I said, "You told me your dad subscribed to Rare Fruits Magazine when you were a...

Christen Hong Coaching 9/10/25 Hi friends, I've been paying more attention to my thought patterns lately — especially the way they can shape my expectations without me even realizing it. This week I listened to a 3-part series with Louise Hay and Cheryl Richardson based on their book You Can Create an Exceptional Life. In it, they spoke about the impact of your thoughts on how you experience the world. This, in conjunction with last week's reflection, had me noticing the little things I...
